  • Carthage was a Phoenician settlement. Legend dates its founding to 814 BC, and it became a major power in the region by the 7th century BC.
  • Matmata has underground houses dug into the ground around courtyards. The Hotel Sidi Idriss there was used as a filming location for Star Wars.
  • Harissa is a paste of red chilies, garlic and caraway. UNESCO added it to its intangible heritage list in 2022.
