Capital: Rabat

  • Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez was founded in 857 or 859 and is described as the oldest continuously functioning institute of higher education in the world.
  • Chefchaouen is known for its blue-painted walls and streets. Explanations differ, from keeping mosquitoes away to attracting visitors.
  • The Roman-era walls of Volubilis ran about 2.6 km and had six main gates. Around 20,000 people lived in the city at its peak in the late second century.
  • Completed in 1993, the Hassan II Mosque has a minaret about 210 metres tall, and the building stands partly over the Atlantic Ocean.
