Brunei

Capital: Bandar Seri Begawan

  • Brunei is the only sovereign state entirely on Borneo. Its coast faces the South China Sea, and Malaysia's Sarawak state surrounds most of it.
  • Ulu Temburong National Park, the country's first, was set up in 1991. Its canopy walkway rises about 50 metres above the forest floor, and visitors reach it only by river.
  • Kampong Ayer is a water village on stilts above the Brunei River. Its houses, schools and mosques are joined by walkways and bridges, and it is often called the Venice of the East.
  • The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, finished in 1958, has a golden dome covered in more than three million pieces of Venetian glass.
  • Bandar Seri Begawan averages about 2,913 millimetres of rain a year, on around 205 days, with temperatures near 23 to 32 degrees Celsius.
