Third-party notices
Next Stop Atlas is our own code plus the third-party material listed here. Each section says where the material comes from and under what licence. The About page in the app links to this file.
Versions are the ones in bun.lock at the time of writing. Where a source is a web service, the terms are the service's own; the notes say which terms apply.
Fonts (SIL Open Font License 1.1)
The four typefaces are self-hosted from the Fontsource packages (imported in apps/web/src/theme.css), so no font request goes to Google.
- Fraunces (headings):

The full licence text is below. It is the copy shipped with the Fraunces package; the other three packages carry the same licence in their own LICENSE files, under their own copyright lines.
Copyright 2020 The Fraunces Project Authors (github.com/undercasetype/Fraunces) Fraunces-Italic[SOFT,WONK,opsz,wght].ttf: Copyright 2020 The Fraunces Project Authors (github.com/undercasetype/Fraunces) This Font Software is licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1. This license is copied below, and is also available with a FAQ at: http://scripts.sil.org/OFL ----------------------------------------------------------- SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007 ----------------------------------------------------------- PREAMBLE The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership with others. The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded, redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives, however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives. DEFINITIONS "Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may include source files, build scripts and documentation. "Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the copyright statement(s). "Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as distributed by the Copyright Holder(s). "Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting, or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a new environment. "Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software. PERMISSION & CONDITIONS Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify, redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font Software, subject to the following conditions: 1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components, in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself. 2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled, redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user. 3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as presented to the users. 4) The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written permission. 5) The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole, must be distributed entirely under this license, and must not be distributed under any other license. The requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply to any document created using the Font Software. TERMINATION This license becomes null and void if any of the above conditions are not met. DISCLAIMER THE FONT SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT OF COPYRIGHT, PATENT, TRADEMARK, OR OTHER RIGHT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, INCLUDING ANY GENERAL, SPECIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE FONT SOFTWARE OR FROM OTHER DEALINGS IN THE FONT SOFTWARE.
Map data: Natural Earth (public domain)
packages/map-data/src/flat.json (1:50m) and globe.json (1:110m) are built by tools/build-map.ts from Natural Earth's admin-0 countries (https://www.naturalearthdata.com/). Natural Earth data is in the public domain. The population figures and the neighbour lists (packages/content/src/neighbours.json, built by tools/build-neighbours.ts) come from the same dataset.
Flags: flag-icons 7.5.0 (MIT)
The SVG files in apps/web/public/flags/ are copied unchanged from flag-icons (https://github.com/lipis/flag-icons) by tools/build-map.ts, under this licence:

Exchange rates: European Central Bank, via Frankfurter
/api/fx (apps/worker/src/fx.ts) asks Frankfurter (https://frankfurter.dev/, API at api.frankfurter.dev) for the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, and keeps the last good copy in D1. Source: European Central Bank. Frankfurter is an open-source service with no key and no warranty.
Short films: YouTube
The Watch tab and the chat's /watch card play short films through YouTube's privacy-enhanced embed (www.youtube-nocookie.com, with rel=0). Nothing loads from YouTube until a person presses play on the picture. The films belong to their channels (the channel name and length are listed with each film in packages/travel/data/published/videos/), and they play under YouTube's Terms of Service. Only films marked kid-safe are shown in Kids mode.
Facts and place text: Wikipedia and Wikivoyage (CC BY-SA 4.0)
The facts, city summaries, food and sight entries in packages/travel/data/published/ are adapted from English Wikipedia and Wikivoyage articles. Each item carries its article's name and link in its source field, and that is where the attribution is. The adapted text is shared under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). Wikipedia and Wikivoyage text: Wikimedia Foundation and the article authors.
Country areas: Wikipedia and CIA World Factbook
packages/content/src/areas.json holds each country's total area in km². tools/build-areas.ts reads the total column of Wikipedia's "List of countries and dependencies by area", which cites the CIA World Factbook and national statistics. The table text is CC BY-SA 4.0 (as above); the CIA World Factbook is a US government publication.
Journey costs
Each cost in packages/travel/data/published/journeys/ cites a source name and link, and records the date it was checked where the data has one. The sources are travel guides and cost sites (for example japantripcost.com, worldtravelguide.net, numbeo.com, iexplore.com, italyplanner.com, selfguidejapan.com, responsibletravel.com and worldatlas.com). Each source's own terms apply to its text. The app shows costs as estimates; they are not live prices.
Language models: Meta Llama on Cloudflare Workers AI
Built with Llama.
The app calls these Workers AI models. Their names are constants in the code.
@cf/meta/llama-3.1-8b-instruct-fast: answers free-text questions in the place chat.CHAT_MODELinapps/worker/src/chat.ts.@cf/meta/llama-guard-3-8b: Meta's safety classifier, which screens a question before it is answered (only on questions that are not already in the cache).GUARD_MODELinapps/worker/src/chat.ts.
These content tools call Workers AI at build time, not in the running app:
@cf/meta/llama-3.3-70b-instruct-fp8-fast: drafts content for review.MODELintools/ai/model.ts.@cf/meta/llama-3.1-8b-instruct: checks drafted claims.CHECK_MODELintools/ai/model.ts.
Llama 3.1 is licensed under the Llama 3.1 Community License, Copyright © Meta Platforms, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Llama 3.3 is licensed under the Llama 3.3 Community License, Copyright © Meta Platforms, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Llama Guard 3 is built on Llama 3.1 and is offered under the Llama 3.1 Community License. The licences are at https://www.llama.com/llama3_1/license/ and https://www.llama.com/llama3_3/license/, and the acceptable use policy is at https://www.llama.com/llama3/use-policy/. The app does not redistribute model weights; the models run on Cloudflare's infrastructure.
Libraries in the browser and the Worker
These are installed from npm and bundled into the app or the Worker. Licences in summary:

npm dependencies: summary
bun install of this commit installs 382 package versions, including build and test tooling. Their licences:
| Licence | Packages | Notes | |---|---|---| | MIT | 315 | | | ISC | 24 | | | Apache-2.0 | 17 | | | BSD-3-Clause | 5 | | | MIT OR Apache-2.0 | 5 | | | OFL-1.1 | 4 | the four fonts | | 0BSD | 2 | | | MPL-2.0 | 2 | lightningcss (build-time CSS tooling) | | LGPL-3.0-or-later | 2 | @img/sharp-libvips (native image libraries used by build tooling) | | Unlicense | 2 | | | CC0-1.0 | 1 | | | Python-2.0 | 1 | | | CC-BY-4.0 | 1 | caniuse-lite data (build tooling) | | MIT (licence given as a JSON object) | 1 | |
The MPL-2.0 and LGPL-3.0 packages are build tooling. This summary does not include a bundle audit: check the served files before claiming a particular library is or is not in them. Each package's licence file is in its folder under node_modules after bun install.
Trademarks
The name Next Stop Atlas and the character Tully the turtle are the project's own. Other names mentioned in the app (companies, channels, publications) belong to their owners and are named only to credit sources.
