  • Istanbul straddles the Bosphorus. About two-thirds of its people live in Europe and the rest in Asia, and it is Turkey's largest city.
  • Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey has stone enclosures erected as far back as 9600 BC, making it one of the oldest known monumental sites.
  • Fairy chimneys in Cappadocia formed when erosion wore away soft volcanic deposits. Sunrise balloon flights over them are a famous experience.
  • The Library of Celsus at Ephesus was built around 125 AD and may have held about 12,000 scrolls. Its façade was rebuilt between 1970 and 1978.
  • Turkey is the fourth most visited country in the world, and it spans about 783,562 square kilometres across Asia and Europe.
